Boosting Home Sales with Staging
In a recent report by the National Association of Realtors® (NAR), it was revealed that nearly half of sellers’ agents (48%) believe that staging a home can significantly reduce the time it spends on the market. This means that when homeowners put in the effort to stage their properties, they tend to sell faster.
Expert Insights on Home Staging
Jessica Lautz, NAR’s deputy chief economist and vice president of research, highlighted the importance of home staging in today’s real estate market. She stated, “As days on the market have increased for home sellers, it’s no surprise that home staging is making a comeback as a valuable tool to attract potential buyers. Buyers want to easily imagine themselves living in a new home, and home staging helps showcase the property in the best possible way.”
Staging’s Impact on Offer Prices
The report also discovered that one in five agents (20%) believes that home staging can increase the offer price of a home by 1% to 5% compared to similar unstaged homes on the market.
Buyer Friendly Staging
Buyers’ agents, in particular, find home staging to be incredibly useful, with 81% stating that it makes it easier for their clients to envision the property as their future home. Among the areas that benefit the most from staging are the living room (39%), the primary bedroom (36%), and the kitchen (30%).
The Role of Real Estate Agents in Preparing Homes for Sale
Kenny Parcell, NAR President and Realtor® from Spanish Fork, Utah, emphasized the importance of preparing a home for sale. He said, “When you’re getting ready to list your home for sale, it’s crucial to do the necessary prep work to make a great first impression. Realtors can provide valuable guidance on making your home inviting, helping it connect with potential buyers and stand out from the competition.”
The Influence of Real Estate TV Shows
The report also touched on the impact of real estate television shows, with a majority of real estate agents noting that these shows have influenced buyers’ expectations. About 73% of respondents said that TV shows depicting the home-buying process set unrealistic or heightened expectations. More than half of those surveyed (55%) reported that buyers often expect homes to look as if they were staged on these TV shows.
In a day where potential home buyers are bombarded with visual stimulation, home staging has become a valuable tool for the home selling process.

Methodology Behind the Report
To compile this report, NAR invited a random sample of 43,176 active Realtors® to participate in an online survey in January 2023. They received 1,921 usable responses, resulting in an overall response rate of 4.4%. With a 95% confidence level, the margin of error is approximately 2.23%.
